Book Review: Sweet Addiction by J Daniels

Sweet Addiction (Sweet Addiction #1)
by J Daniels
Release Date: May 2, 2014
Source: Gift
Wedding hookups never amount to anything.

Those who partake in this wicked little activity know the rules. Get in. Get laid. Get out. There's no expectation of a relationship. It is what it is.

Dylan Sparks knows the rules. She’s familiar with the protocol. And she engages in the best sex of her life with a complete stranger at her ex-boyfriend’s wedding.

Reese Carroll doesn’t care about the rules. He wants more than just one night with Dylan.

And Dylan finds him too addicting to pass up.

Sweet Addiction is the story of one woman’s struggle to keep things casual, and one man’s desire to never let her go.

J Daniels has been on my TBR for over a year now and I have now devoured three of her books in one year. This is the first book in her Sweet Addiction series and I couldn't wait to read about a baker falling in love!

Dylan Sparks isn't one to have a random hook up. But at her ex's wedding, she's out for a night of fun. When she literally falls into Reese Carroll's lap, they can't deny the instant attraction and Dylan gets her hook up. But Reese wants more. Dylan can't seem to stay away from Reese, but she makes him promise to keep things casual. Stick to her rules. The more addicted they become to one another, though, the harder it is for Reese and Dylan to ignore the very real feelings they've grown for one another.

Okay, so starting off, I knew I would love this book because Dylan owns her own bakery. I loved how dedicated she was and how she would wake up at 5 am every day, go for a run with her best friend, and open the bakery around 7. This is FINALLY a character who has real responsibilities and takes her job seriously. I loved that about Dylan. And Reese is actually successful at his job, too, and has to make time to see Dylan around his work day. It was fun just seeing real people trying to navigate the relationship world while having responsibilities and other obligations.

On to the actual relationship, I absolutely loved how fun Dylan and Reese were together. Their friends also added a fun commentary to their relationship and I just really enjoyed watching these two fight their feelings for one another. Reese's gifts to Dylan were so cute and I loved how much they really, truly had feelings for each other but were too stubborn to acknowledge them.

Overall, I am so happy that I finally picked up Sweet Addiction. I absolutely loved this fun, entertaining romance. Dylan was such a likable and relatable character and I loved her throughout this story. Of course, Reese was swoon worthy and I loved the hilarious and sweet moments they had together. You should definitely pick up Sweet Addiction! I know I can't wait to read more from this series!

Book Review: The Hook Up by Kristen Callihan

The Hook Up (Game On #1)
by Kristen Callihan
Release Date: January 16, 2015
Source: Amazon
The rules: no kissing on the mouth, no staying the night, no telling anyone, and above all… No falling in love.

Anna Jones just wants to finish college and figure out her life. Falling for star quarterback Drew Baylor is certainly not on her to do list. Confident and charming, he lives in the limelight and is way too gorgeous for his own good. If only she could ignore his heated stares and stop thinking about doing hot and dirty things with him. Easy right?

Too bad he’s committed to making her break every rule…

Football has been good to Drew. It’s given him recognition, two National Championships, and the Heisman. But what he really craves is sexy yet prickly Anna Jones. Her cutting humor and blatant disregard for his fame turns him on like nothing else. But there’s one problem: she's shut him down. Completely.

That is until a chance encounter leads to the hottest sex of their lives, along with the possibility of something great. Unfortunately, Anna wants it to remain a hook up. Now it’s up to Drew to tempt her with more: more sex, more satisfaction, more time with him. Until she’s truly hooked. It's a good thing Drew knows all about winning.

All’s fair in love and football…Game on.

This book has been on my TBR for SOOOO LONNGGGG. I have meant to pick it up so many times throughout 2017, but I just never did. I finally decided enough was enough and picked it up last week and cannot believe I've waited this long to read this amazing sport romance!

Drew Baylor is the golden boy. He is a Heisman winner and quarterback of his college football team. He knows where his future is taking him and he can't wait. Anna Jones, on the other hand, has no clue what she wants to do when she graduates college and needs to focus on her life. When Anna and Drew have a class together, Drew knows he needs to know the redhead in his class, but Anna wants nothing to do with him. When they continue to run into each other, though, Anna and Drew can't deny their chemistry and agree to keep things strictly physical. But what happens when they both grow feelings for one another when they promised to simply be a hook up?

I have to start off by saying that when I started this book, it took me a long time to get into it. Four days passed and I had only read 150 pages. Once I hit the halfway mark, though, I devoured the second half of the novel in one night. This started off very college-ey where the couple went to parties, saw each other in class, and wanted to keep their relationship super casual. I have been very picky about my college romances lately, so I was just meh about the story. Then, things got so serious and tested the relationship between Anna and Drew and I was all for it. Drew was so freaking adorable and I loved how much he truly like just being around Anna. Seriously, Drew sounds like the perfect boyfriend and I want him for myself!

I was only a little annoyed with how insecure Anna was. Don't get me wrong, I was happy to finally have a heroine who had some insecurity and didn't think she was worth the attention of the hot shot football player, but it was annoying how she let other people's opinions dictate her relationship. Drew got annoyed with that aspect of Anna's character and so did I. Other than that, though, their trials and fears were so realistic and relatable. I was obsessed with this story by the end and I didn't want to stop reading!

Overall, this has definitely become one of my new favorite sports romances. This reminded me a lot of the Off-Campus series by Elle Kennedy. We got lots of sports, some endearing teammates of our hero, and a swoon-worthy romance. If you are a new adult sports romance fan, you HAVE to pick up The Hook Up!

When I saw how many authors were contributing to this anthology, I was SO excited to read this. The only problem? I had no idea it would be sooooo long. These authors aren't writing short stories but rather novellas. That means that when you start this book, you have A LOT of pages to go through. While I was excited to read the stories from my favorite authors, there were other stories in here that I was seriously not a fan of. I think that the first few stories in this book were very weak and I instantly was not a fan of the characters. Honestly, I ended up skipping to my favorites authors (Charleigh Rose and Emma Scott) and gobbling up their stories that I knew I would love.

What I did love about this book was the diversity in characters and sports. Some took place in college while some took place when a character was a professional athlete or even a retired athlete. There was a wide variety of one night stands turned more, hate to love, and friends to lovers. With that variety, though, came stories that lacked proper pacing and character development. I have a big problem with novellas because the pacing always seems awkward to me. There was one story in here where the characters hooked up and literally fast forward three months of them dating within the next paragraph. Where was the development? It became hard for me to feel connected to the characters or their relationship.

While there were some definite strong stories in this anthology, overall I didn't enjoy them all. I skipped around to the authors I like while giving up on a lot of the stories because I just wasn't interested or feeling the characters. If you have a favorite author in this anthology, I say go ahead and read this for their story, but be ready to read some stories you probably won't end up loving.

Mandi Beck

Mandi Beck has been an avid reader all of her life. A deep love for books always had her jotting down little stories on napkins, notebooks, and her hand. As an adult she was further submerged into the book world through book clubs and the epicness of social media. It was then that she graduated to writing her stories on her phone and then finally on a proper computer. A nursing student, mother to two rambunctious and somewhat rotten boys, and stepmom to two great girls away at college, she shares her time with her husband in Chicago where she was born and raised. Mandi is a diehard hockey fan and blames the Blackhawks when her deadlines are not met.

Emma Scott
I write romances with flawed characters, characters with artistic hearts: builders, poets, and writers of various makes and models. I love to write book lovers; those who have found refuge, companionship, and escape in books, much as we do in real life. I like realism, honesty, authenticity in storytelling. I love to write about enduring love, soul-deep love, in as real a setting as I can make, but with big smooshy HEAs. I believe in diversity, open-mindedness, and inclusion. I like sweetness mixed with steam, love conquering all, and above all, hope. Love always wins.

Book Review: Flow by Kennedy Ryan

Flow (Grip #0.5)
by Kennedy Ryan
Release Date: February 25, 2017
Source: Amazon
In 8 years, Marlon James will be one of the brightest rising stars in the music industry.

Bristol Gray will be his tough, no-nonsense manager.

But when they first meet, she’s a college student finding her way in the world, and he’s an artist determined to make his way in it.

From completely different worlds, all the things that should separate them only draw them closer.

It’s a beautiful beginning, but where will the story end?

FLOW is the prequel chronicling the week of magical days and nights that will haunt Grip & Bristol for years to come. GRIP is the full-length conclusion of their story.

All over Instagram I have seen amazing things about Kennedy Ryan's Grip series. I was in between books and I wanted something quick, so I decided to finally pick up this novella and see what the hype was all about.

Grip doesn't know what to think when he's told to pick up his best friend's twin sister from the airport. The last person he expects to pick up is a gorgeous, confident woman. He knows he should never want his best friend's sister, but sometimes you can't deny attraction…

I'm always wary going into novellas because I never think they have enough time to develop a substantial plot. Holy moly did this book have substance. From the moment Grip and Bristol met, they were intrigued by one another. What I loved about this book that a lot of other books don't have was the real, honest conversations they had with one another. Grip is black and Bristol is white and they talked about race and how interracial couples are perceived or if they've ever been in one. Nothing ever felt forced or political; they were just two people having a conversation. And Grip's personality was so fun and so impossible not to love. I honestly couldn't get enough of him.

What more can I say? Grip and Bristol had amazing chemistry and I really loved the depth of background we got on the individual characters. Since I fell head over heels for these two characters together, I'm so nervous what's going to happen in their full-length novel, but you bet I can't way to finally read Grip
